Rainbow by Moonlight
Chapter 1
August 6, 1920
Dear Mother and Father,
I have only a moment to dash off a bit of correspondence to let you know I arrived safely in the town of Sevierville. My trip was without mishap with some minor delays as one might expect coming all the way from Chicago and changing trains in Knoxville. I was well cared for by the porters and red caps who were in all regards courtous and helpful. I was directed by a kindly gentleman as to where I might find a meal of excellent quality when we were delayed in Lexingon. Ever mindful of where she stepped, for Evelyn Bishop had cautioned her about snakes, she found herself thinking that her mother would find this even worse than dangerous. She would find it all very unladylike. Smilling boldly, she walked the short distance back to the Model T.
Claire had hoped for the sake of decorum to make it to their destination but too much coffee with her meal had forced her to confess her predicament. Evelyn had then unceremoniously announced it to their driver, Mr. Andy Huff who was a prominent citizen of Gatlinburg. Claire had considered hurrying off to be done with it hoping to keep some of her dignity intact, but Evelyn had insisted upon standing watch instructing her as they went on the wisdom of being alert to snakes lurking in the weeds. Now Evelyn jumped back into the car without a word with Claire following closely behind her.
"Let's be off, Mr. Huff," Evelyn said matter-of-factly as the man sat staring modestly ahead.
He took off without another word.
Claire sat back against the seat a self-satisfied grin tugging at her lips...
